Can you imagine Zazie Beetz as Rapunzel with a huge afro? Well, Zazie and her fiancé, fellow actor David Rysdahl, yes! Both are working on a script that would give the German fairy tale of the Grimm brothers in their 1812 anthology, Children’s and domestic stories (now known as Grimm Fairy Tales) a new hair style.
The talented actress Zazie Beetz was born in Berlin, Germany, she is the daughter of a German father and an African-American mother and speaks perfect German, so she would be taking advantage of part of her roots to give life to a new and modern Rapunzel.
Zazie Beetz’s career has been on the rise since she played Vanessa Keefer on the acclaimed series Atlanta, from FX, in 2016 and for which she was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She also has appeared in big productions like Dead Pool 2, joker and the western The Harder They Fallas well as in the series Easy and invincible.
The new Rapunzel would explore “what happens next”
Recently, David Rysdahl was interviewed by the medium ScreenRant and took the opportunity to talk about the Rapunzel story that he and his girlfriend are preparing, with a modern but retro touch of the 70s (at least in terms of hair).
We’re doing a Rapunzel story, kind of what happens next, for Zazie. He will have a huge afro. That’s something we’re excited to write… Zazie is playing Rapunzel in the script we did! She’s going to break it with this project. She is very good at what she does.
Let us remember that on the screen, the most famous adaptation of Rapunzel has been, without a doubt, the animated musical Tangled which Disney released in 2010, in which Mandy Moore gave voice to the character of Rapunzel in the American version and Danna Paola in the Latin American version. In addition, we have seen the princess in Shrek and in the series One Upon a Time.
Rysdahl also mentioned that her version of Rapunzel will be something of a sequel that will focus on “what happens next,” which sounds like the new princess might leave her long hair behind for a new afro style once. Once he manages to escape from the tower and reintegrate into society to undertake new adventures.
The pair of actors is developing the project through their production company Sleepy Banner. For now, we will wait anxiously until we know if this new version of Rapunzel manages to become a real film production.
