Since Zara signed up to the UN Global Compact in 2001 and implemented its first Environmental Strategic Plan in 2002, it has made numerous changes aimed at making its economic activity increasingly sustainable. You have now published a manifest with all the goals it has pending in this area between now and 2040.
2022
Zara’s first commitment is that at least 50% of the products it markets throughout this year are manufactured under its Join Life standard, which label garments that have been produced with more sustainable materials and processes. Also in 2022, the energy consumed in its facilities (offices, logistics centers and stores) will come from renewable sources.
2023
In 2023, the goal is that all the cotton used for the production of the garments has a sustainable origin (organic cotton, Better Cotton or recycled cotton), and that all cellulosic fibers are produced following strict environmental standards, thus supporting the Changing Markets Foundation initiative that promotes the responsible manufacturing of viscose and modal.
In addition, the textile giant is redesigning all its packaging so that by 2023 it will be more sustainablereducing the amount of raw material used and unifying materials to facilitate their reuse and recycling, as well as to guarantee that no single-use plastics reach the customer that same year. Likewise, it works to achieve zero waste in its own facilities.
2025
In parallel, Amancio Ortega’s firm develops innovation programs for reduce the impact of water in your supply chain by at least 25% by 2025. That same year, all linen and polyester will be more sustainable or recycled, and all plastics used in their business will be reused or recycled.
2040
However, the ultimate goal, to reduce the effects of climate change, is to achieve climate neutrality by 2040. This means having zero greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) or that those emitted into the atmosphere are compensatedthrough a transition towards renewable energies and a more eco-efficient use of resources.
