Xochitl Gomez spoke about the harassment she suffered after entering the MCU. The actress came to Marvel thanks to the role of América Chávez in Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness. Now his role has become an essential piece of said cinematographic universe, but there are many viewers who are not satisfied with it.
According to the website The WrapIt wasn’t easy for the Mexican-American actress to suddenly find herself in the spotlight. Of course, participating in a multi-million dollar Marvel production puts you at the center of the conversation. However, for Gómez, this conversation turned into harassment and negative comments regarding her skin color.
On the other hand, her role comes from an LGBT family. It is shown in the film that Chavez was raised by two mothers who were lost in the multiverse. The brief scene that shows nothing more than a kiss on the cheek between two women, was enough for the film to be banned in several countries. In social networks, many held Chávez responsible for that. They claimed that the actress had ruined Marvel for many territories.
Luckily Xóchitl Gómez found her best support network with Iman Vellani, another MCU actress. Both have suffered harassment and repercussions for their skin colors and the prominence they acquired in Marvel audiovisuals. They both decided to go out to dinner to share their bullying stories and build on them.
“It was nice to be able to have these shared experiences that made me feel like, ok, I’m not the only one,” Gomez said. “And especially with bullying and haters and stuff. And being able to say, ‘Okay, it’s not just me. This happens to you and it happens to some other people too.”
Gomez and Vellani quickly became friends. Between the two of them, they not only assimilated what it meant to fully enter the most mediatic film saga of all time. But, what it also meant to be trails of change and representation for so many young generations.
«And it is much worse for brown people. Because there are layers of racism, and it’s just hard,” Gomez shared. However, in the end they were even able to laugh at the situation to deal with it in the best possible way. After all, both already belong to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and are part of the new young faces that will become important in the future.
“And then being able to laugh and just be like, ‘Look at the conversation we just had!’ Look at that, we’re laughing and it’s great,” Gomez said.
