The opposition front candidate Strength and Heart for Mexico, Xochitl Galvezaccused this Monday the official candidate, Claudia Sheinbaum, of “wanting to continue giving hugs” to drug trafficking, which he warned that “he will not allow it” if he wins the presidential elections in June.
At a conference in Mexico City on security, Gálvez presented 15 points to reverse “the disaster” that, in his opinion, Mexico is experiencing as a result of the strategy of the current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“What the candidate (Sheinbaum) wants is to continue giving hugs to ‘El Chapo’s’ mother and I am not, I am not going to consent to ‘El Chapo’,” he warned in reference to drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, former leader. of the Sinaloa cartel and who is currently serving a life sentence in the US.
In his opinion, his rival from the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena) “wants” the public security policy of the current Government to continue, “which has been totally lax with criminals.”
“I am going with an intelligent, serious strategy that will return resources to the municipal police.”
Gálvez explained.
This plan would be based on “acting with all the strength and capacity of the State”, without giving “any concessions or courtesy” to organized violence and through “recovering respect for the vocation” of the Army.
In fact, the candidate reiterated her refusal to allow the Armed Forces to carry out civilian tasks.
Asked about the reaction that this measure could have among the military, she assured that “the generals of the counterattacks, maybe not” are going to like it, but that the majority of soldiers “are tired.”
“What this Government has done is use the Army for Trump’s pleasure and, with this, the Army is not happy,”
he opined.
Broken down into 15 points, the strategy also includes a boost to civic justice to “stop saturating” the penal system and the creation of “at least” one maximum security prison.
This controversial initiative, which was made public last week, is reminiscent of the megaprison that the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, opened in January 2023 to house 40,000 gang members convicted or detained in the context of the emergency regime, implemented to combat these bands.
Search for missing persons, “national priority”
Regarding missing persons, the opponent categorized the search as a “national priority” and promised to “resume” Mexico’s participation in multilateral bodies on human rights.
“I am not going to close the door of the National Palace neither to the missing women, nor to the mothers of missing women or children, nor to the women,” he said.
Furthermore, he opted for a public policy that “guarantees the exercise of freedom of expression” in the journalistic field and criticized the “signaling” of reporters that, in his opinion, López Obrador does.
“What this country needs is a woman who has a firm hand to return peace and tranquility. This does not mean facing gunshots with criminals,” she stressed.
In the June 2 elections, the largest in the country’s history, 20,375 federal positions in Mexico will be renewed, including the presidency, the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, as well as nine state governments.
