AMD’s upscaling technology could be a game changer for console development.
FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology is AMD’s equivalent of NVidia’s DLSS, a tool capable of reconstructing a high-quality image from a lower resolution source. Although NVidia’s solution is widely more widespread, AMD’s FSR has been making its way into PCs in the last year and the American company has announced that soon it will also be compatible with Xbox in its latest version FSR 2.0, in full.
at the end of last year Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S Dev Kits Announced to Already Support AMD’s FSR, Now It’s the latest version, FSR 2.0, which has been announced to be coming soon to Xbox consoles (via TheVerge). There is still no specific date for it, but AMD assures “also will be fully compatible with Xbox and will be available in the Xbox GDK for registered developers to use in their games.”
Since the announcement of this proprietary technology from AMD, manufacturer of the new generation console chips, it has been said that the FSR can have “a massive impact” on PS5 and Xbox Series X | S, especially for independent studios or more modest. Achieving native 4K can be a very demanding task depending on the situation, so a rescaling aid like FSR can be a very useful tool.
At the moment there are no games on consoles that have expressly shown their use of AMD’s FSR technology, but in this FSR 2.0 announcement that took place at GDC 2022 Deathloop has been used as an example. Would it be possible for the Arkane Studios game to have this technology when it premiered on Xbox? Recall that the Bethesda game is, for now, exclusive to PS5 on consoles, but it would arrive on Xbox Series X | S at the end of this summer, 12 months after its premiere on PlayStation.
