- Although all people are exposed, a slight majority of deaths from heart disease in Mexico occur in men.
- During 2021, 124,081 deaths were recorded and the trend indicates that in 2022 a new record will be set.
- Every September 29, World Heart Day is commemorated.
In recent decades, the mortality generated by heart diseases has increased dramatically worldwide. Although it is true that there are variable risk factors between each individual, there are also aspects such as bad habits and the null culture of prevention that cause this figure to increase year after year.
A serious problem that is constantly increasing
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Mexico. and they are even above other serious problems such as cancer and diabetes. It is possible to see the behavior of this trend with the figures of recent years. While in 2012 heart disease caused an average of 9.3 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, by 2021 this figure rose to 17.8 deaths, that is, almost double.
In other words, last year there were 124,081 deaths due to cardiovascular diseases, with a slight difference between men and women: 54.73% of the total cases occurred in men and 45.26% in women.
As for the age issue, the group most affected by these ailments is that of people aged 65 and over because it represents 75.75% of the total deaths.
Unfortunately, current figures indicate that 2022 will be a year that will close with a new historical increase in these cases. To date, with more than 40,800 cases reported as of September 26the figure for last year is far exceeded, which was 28,735 cases in the accumulated to date, according to data from the Ministry of Health (SSa).
“September 29 marks World Heart Day. Today more than ever it is essential to redirect attention to the care of this organ and promote the culture of prevention and timely diagnosis to contain the rates of heart disease. From our position as a medical community and key players in the health of Mexicans, at Sanofi we have a strong commitment to offer innovative alternatives of great use for the medical treatment of those who suffer from these chronic-degenerative diseases”, says Dr. Ma. Elena Sañudo, Medical Director of the General Medicines unit of Sanofi Mexico.
It should be noted that the ischemic disease caused 78.2% of all deaths from heart disease in Mexico during 2021. This is an indication of the high levels of cholesterol that people accumulate and bad habits such as a sedentary lifestyle that generate complications of this type.
Tips to maintain a healthy life
On the other hand, on the occasion of world heart daythe head of the Department of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine of the “Ignacio Chávez” National Institute of Cardiology, Hermes Ilarraza Lomelí, pointed out that timely care and treatment, as well as full rehabilitation, allow those who have suffered a heart attack to recover cardiovascular function and resume your daily activities.
He stated that a fundamental factor for the cardiovascular health is physical activity, since physically active people are healthier, have fewer cholesterol plaques -a factor that can condition myocardial infarctions-, and therefore live much longer in good health.
In addition, healthy behaviors must be promoted to generate a virtuous circle of good eating, without deficiencies or abuses in calories, fats and proteins, and sufficient consumption of natural water, as part of living well.
