Wonder Woman’s first appearance in the comic book became a priceless item for DC collectors.
Wonder Woman (or known also by its name in English “Wonder Woman”) is one of the most iconic characters of the DC Comics Editorial. And her popularity has become so widespread that it’s hard not to associate her with her red and blue outfit. This superheroine was created by William Moulton Marston. But, in addition to being designed with the clothing feature we mentioned, she is really powerful. This warrior princess of the Amazons (a fictional people based on the Amazons who appear in Greek mythology) is known in her homeland as Princess Diana of Themyscira, although she also uses the secret identity of Diana Prince.
His character first appeared in All Star Comics #8.(December 1941) and with his alter-ego in Sensation Comics #1 (January 1942). I has also regularly appeared in comics in superhero groups such as the Justice League (since 1960) and the Justice Society of America (since 1941).
In fact, the Wonder Woman title has been published continuously ever since, except for a period in 1986. However, One of the aspects that has most represented her as a DC heroine is her fight for peace, justice, love and sexual equality.. In fact, this very thing turned the character into something of a feminist icon. Her origin is traced back to World War II, when she was designed to fight in the occupying Axis military forces, as well as fighting the most dangerous villains. However, her strong sense of fairness positioned her as one of the top players in the comics industry.
In her extensive career she ended up as villains such as Doctor Poison, Ares, Baroness Paula Von Gunther, Cheetah and the witch Circe, a fact that only consolidated her great reputation as a heroine.
But, to get into the interesting stuff, Wonder Woman’s superhuman powers have also set her apart from her peers, not least because her gifts were obtained from the gods and enhanced through extensive training. In addition to her fighting skills, she has a wide arsenal, among which we find indestructible magic bracelets, her tiara that she also uses as a weapon and, of course, the iconic Lasso of Truth.
Interestingly, she is one of the few DC Comics heroines who does not have a male counterpart. But that hasn’t stopped her from being part of the canon and representing the franchise alongside Batman, who also has widespread popularity among fans of the franchise.
An auction that gave a new value to a copy of Wonder Woman
In view of the background of the superheroine and their respective popularity around the world, it is that one of the issues of All Star Comics #8, the first appearance of Wonder Woman, became the goal of many collectors for its great value. Thus, its sale broke an impressive record for 1.62 million dollars last week, when the four days of Heritage Auctions were held.
The now prestigious issue of All Star Comics, rated 9.4 (out of 10) by Certified Guaranty Company (CGC), which was a record for the edition. Although, considering that this event takes place annually, in a 2017 auction it was surpassed by another specimen at $936,223. And, unsurprisingly, the entire series of comic book sales broke records in price. As is known, it is the eighth time in 2022 that a comic is sold for an amount that exceeds one million dollars. Among them, we have Superman #1, Action Comics #1, Marvel Comics #1, Captain America Comics #1, Fantastic Four #1, and two copies of Detective Comics #27.
Of course, the number in question, officially put on sale in 1941, does not have the same quality that was appreciated in other books, including to Sensation Comics #1 starring Wonder Woman. In fact, the heroine only appears inside the issue, while the Justice Society of America appears on the cover. Presumably it is his first appearancealthough in a lateral way, since his name is not even found on the cover of All Star.
“No comic primarily sought after for its relationship with a female superhero has ever fetched more than $1 million at auction before,” CGC said in an official announcement.
Additionally, the CGC census total includes 191 issues of All Star Comics #8, but the record sale was taken by the number that had a rating greater than 9making it a milestone in the history of DC Comics sales.
