What is Lupus?
According to the Mayo Clinic, lupus is a disease that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues and organs (autoimmune disease). The inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different systems and organs in the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs.
Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because its signs and symptoms are often similar to those of other diseases. The most distinctive sign of lupus is a rash on the face that resembles the spread wings of a butterfly on both cheeks and occurs in many, but not all, cases of lupus.
Which are the lupus signs?
According to information from the Mayo Clinic, Symptoms can be sudden or develop slowly, they can be mild or severe, and temporary or permanent. Most people with lupus have a mild disease characterized by episodes (called “flares”) in which signs and symptoms get worse for a while, then get better, or even go away completely for a while.
The most common signs and symptoms include: fatigue, fever, joint pain, stiffness and swelling, butterfly-shaped rash on the face, lesions that appear on the skin or worsen with sun exposure. fingers and toes that turn white or blue when exposed to cold or during stressful situations, shortness of breath, chest pain, dry eyes and headache, disorientation, or memory loss.
