The Mexican artistic swimming team makes history
The Mexican squad formed by Regina Alférez, Jessica Sobrino, Glenda Inzunza, Samanta Rodríguez, Daniela Estrada, Pamela Toscano, Itzamary González and Fernanda Arellano; with the leadership of the experienced Nuria Diosdado and Joana Jiménez; performed an almost perfect routine to the rhythm of the Queen song Don’t Stop Me Now, that captivated judges and spectators, in the technical test of mixed teams.

Finally, the Mexicans finished with a score of 270.1584, the highest in the competition, beating the teams of Italy and France, who obtained the silver and bronze medals respectively.
A journey full of financial hardships
The aquatic team overcame a great number of adversities to reach Egypt, since they did not have the support of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE) or any government body.
However, businessman Carlos Slim, through the Telmex Foundation, paid for the plane tickets, lodging and food for the 14 people who traveled to African lands. Also, to raise funds, the swimmers sold bathing suits and towels; and nine brands joined the support of the athletes, who traveled to Egypt on May 8 and won gold.
