A blockchain or technology project “blockchain” seeks to turn the Sea of Cortez, in northwestern Mexico, into the first decarbonized economic zone on the planet.
The Sea of Cortez Forum presented the plan on Thursday “Mar de Cortés Region Carbon Neutral Goal 2030”, that seeks the decarbonization of the products and services of the area, one of the most important marine ecosystems in North America, as it is the largest fishing area in Mexico.
The project consists of a calculator that allows knowing how much carbon footprint each activity or action generates, both in companies and in people, explained José Ramón Casillas, president and CEO of Spectrotec, a firm specializing in information technology.
The goal of our project is to manage to lead the Mar de Cortés region to be the first economic region in the world that, in a sustainable and coordinated manner, generates specific actions to fight against the climate”,
Casillas stated.
The verifier also calculates the tons of carbon dioxide that a company or organization project prevents or removes from the atmosphere.
Carbon dioxide
For each ton of carbon dioxide that a project avoids or removes, the platform issues a carbon credit, which can be traded only once.
A company can purchase the necessary carbon offsets to offset the percentage of the carbon footprint that it emits from its product, service, or event.
The great secret of our project basically consists in the fact that we have to create sustainable projects in the region that are eligible to receive carbon credits from anywhere in the world through micro-compensation”,
Casillas deepened.
The initiative was presented at the “Mission Prosperity Summit 2022” in Los Cabos, where more than 400 attendees and 42 speakers discussed ecosystem preservation, tourism, the climate crisis, water stress, social responsibility, and impact investments.
Sea of Cortez Forum
The importance of the Sea of Cortez lies in the fact that in its almost 259,000 square kilometers, with more than 900 protected islands, it is the largest fishing area in Mexico, since 77% of the national fishing is concentrated in the Pacific and, of this, 80 % comes from the Gulf of California.
As part of the project, the Mar de Cortés Forum will promote programs in the region that are sustainable, verified and reviewed by international organizations to achieve their certification for the generation of carbon credits.
These projects must demonstrate that they can avoid the generation of greenhouse gases or that they can subtract and steal carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
The Mar de Cortés Forum will initiate an affiliation process for companies, business chambers, organizations and foundations in the region, of any line of business or sector, who wish to join the project to create decarbonized products and services.
