The son of actor William Hurt reports the death of his father, who is remembered in the MCU for bringing Thunderbolt Ross to life.
William Hurt’s son released a statement announcing his father’s death at age 71, a week shy of his 72nd birthday. The report adds that the death was due to natural causes. William Hurt played General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the MCU, making his debut in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
In their statement, their son Will wrote: “It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar-winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among the family, of natural causes. The family requests privacy at this time.”
Hurt was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his roles in Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), Children of a Lesser God (1986), and Broadcast News (1987). As a supporting actor he was nominated for an Oscar in 2005 for David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence. He won his Oscar for Kiss of the Spider Woman.
Willam Hurt debuted in the MCU as Edward Norton’s nemesis in Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk in the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. With this character he repeated in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and Black Widow.
