john wick 5, with Chad Stahelski again directing, is not a certainty yet. Although the distributor Lionsgate revealed months ago that a fifth installment of the popular action saga starring Keanu Reeves was in development, it really cannot be guaranteed that Stahelski and Reeves will be involved. Baba Yaga’s story apparently came to an end through the fourth film, and the director would have no problem leaving it as it is… Although, above all, he says he always keeps “a very open mind.”
Chad Stahelski, who has led the four films that make up the saga so far, admitted in a recent interview with Empire who personally does not know how feasible it is john wick 5 with him as director:
“Honestly, I don’t know. Lionsgate is itching to do more John Wick stuff, and understandably so. It’s not bad for a director to have a property that they want to do more of.”
On the other hand, similar to what Stahelski declared weeks ago, he would be willing to return to the director’s chair as long as there is an attractive idea that convinces him to expand the story of the dog-loving murderer.
“Right now I have no idea. But I could wake up tomorrow and have a great idea that I would pitch to Keanu, or he would pitch to me, and I could hit the nail on the head of, ‘Oh my God, we have to do this right now,'” the 50-year-old filmmaker added.
Released in March 2023, the film john wick 4 it was “a good closure” in Stahelski’s eyes; a conclusion that boasts a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was able to gross $427 million at the global box office. But even having finished it on such a high note, the director has the little thorn that motivates him to return to that saga sooner or later:
“There’s the competitor, or the real director in me, who says, ‘Fuck it, let’s see if we can do it.’ He is very tempting. I don’t have the ‘why’ yet, but that doesn’t mean we should stop looking.”
In addition, the also specialist in risk scenes knows that a pleasant quality of john wick is that each installment explores new ways of stamping action, spectacle and adrenaline on the screen. So a fifth film would also require him to reinvent himself.
“I have scenes and action sequences in my head that we haven’t used that I would love to do,” Stahelski confessed. “If we go back, we can’t do the same. I have to do my homework. I have to improve”.

It could be argued that the major drawback to doing john wick 5 is that the titular character died at the end of the previous installment. But as Chad Stahelski rightly said to Empire, “we’ve seen John deal with worse injuries” than those that allegedly killed him. Consequently, the door remains open for more Baba Yaga on the big screen.
On the other hand, what does Stahelski think of the possibility of handing over the reins to another director for the (hypothetical) future films of john wick?
“I keep a very open mind. If someone I don’t know walks through that door and proposes something to me, it might be worth talking about. But I am very selfish and jealous. I’m a control freak,” acknowledged the director.
