During a meeting at the equity table on Tuesday, February 14, the National Government gave its approval to the Citizen Income program. This program aims to provide a monthly sum of money to all Colombian families that are in a situation of poverty or extreme poverty. According to information provided by Social Prosperity, the monthly incentive will be $500,000.
President Petro’s plan, which is still in the transition phase, would benefit around 2.9 million households in a vulnerable situation in Colombia. As reported by the Department for Social Prosperity, the databases containing information on people in poverty will be joined, which since 2021 are part of the monetary aid transfer system delivered by the government.
In summary, households that previously received benefits from programs such as “Families in Action”, “Ingreso Solidario”, “Jóvenes en Acción” and other similar ones, will now be included in a single database in order to guarantee the single delivery of Citizen Income.
Who is eligible to receive Citizen Income?
After the end of the Solidarity Income program, the only active subsidies are those of Familias en Acción, Jóvenes en Acción and other financial aid that are granted as a measure of aid in the face of the effects caused by the rainy season that recently affected the country. The distribution of financial support will be the responsibility of the Department of Social Prosperity and will be delivered to households that are in a situation of poverty, extreme poverty or socioeconomic vulnerability.

In order to receive the Citizen Income subsidy in 2023, it is essential that households be registered and classified in Sisbén IV. The National Government will be in charge of determining which families are eligible to receive the subsidy, based on their level of vulnerability.
