Will Smith spoke for the first time about the slap he gave Chris Rock at the last edition of the Oscars. Through a video, the interpreter who just won a statuette for best actor during the event for his performance in King Richard, apologized to the comedian and referred to what happened.
In the record, which he shared via social networksthe following sentence is read at the beginning: “It’s been a while… In the last few months, I’ve been thinking a lot and working a lot.”
After appearing on screen, Smith pointed out why he didn’t immediately apologize to Rock at the same ceremony, when he went upstairs to get his award.
“I was confused at the time. Everything was blurry. I contacted Chris and the message I got is that he is not ready to talk. When he is, he will contact me. I want to tell you, Chris, that I apologize. My behavior was unacceptable and I am here when you are ready to speak, “he said in statements recorded by Cnn in Spanish.
Similarly, the actor apologized to the entire family of Chris Rock, also acknowledging that he had a good relationship with his brother Tony.
“I didn’t think about how many people I hurt at that time,” the interpreter acknowledged. “Tony was someone close and this is probably irreparable,” he added.
Smith further stated that he spent the last three months “replaying and understanding the nuances and complexity of what happened at the time.”
“I’m not going to try to download all of that right now. But I can tell all of you, there is not a part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave at the time,” she stated.
Finally, he assured that “no part of me thinks that this is the best way to handle a lack of respect or insult.”
