We may not have found out (because it is a seen and unseen) who has won the Oscar for best production design, but the conversation on the night of the awards has revolved around the unpleasant incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock, with the first attacking the second after an (unfortunate) joke at the expense of his wife.
Hours after an acceptance speech (for winning the Best Actor award for ‘The Williams Method’) in which he apologized but avoided mentioning the attacked, Will Smith has taken the step of publicly apologizing to Chris Rock.
He has done it through a post on Instagram, in which he has recognized that was completely out of placehaving been carried away by his emotions:
“Violence, in all its forms, is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at the Academy Awards last night was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are part of my job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me and I reacted emotionally.
I’d like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I crossed the line and I was wrong. I am ashamed and my actions are not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.
I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, the attendees and everyone who watched it around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams family and my ‘The Williams Method’ family. I deeply regret that my behavior has tarnished what has otherwise been a precious journey for all of us.
I am a construction site.
To be honest,
Will»
Jada Pinkett-Smith talks about her alopecia
The joke, as we know, turned on around the baldness of Jada Pinkett-Smith, who suffers from alopecia. A condition that she herself has spoken about on social networks, highlighting her relationship with her hair as an actress in Hollywood and highlighting that she fought hard to show her hair naturally.
“Being a black woman and dealing with hair in Hollywood, especially in the era I came in, having your hair as European as possible was always THE norm. That was a challenge because I like my hair wild and curly, but no one wanted that. So I always had to do my hair in ways that didn’t feel natural to me for trying to play along. If I cover it up, everyone is like we want your straight, flowy hair. It’s like okay, cool, but that’s not really what my hair likes to do. I had to learn to have the courage to say I’m not going to do it, that’s why I feel free today. I don’t give a damn what people feel about my bald head. Because, you know what, I love it.”
Apologies that come at an opportune moment, with the debate on what went wrong for the incident to have been allowed and even if the Oscar could be withdrawn from Will Smith.
