Users debate the reason for Coppel’s strategy with the sale of groceries and food.
They are amazed to find juices, beans, soft drinks and other basic items on the shelves.
They compare their system of “small payments” with supermarkets and convenience stores.
A consumer was surprised by the basic necessities that make Coppel potential competitor of the chain of convenience stores OXXO, since Now anyone can get their food on credit and pay monthly without interest.
The user’s TikTok ananias_vels generated debate about the opportunities that this new turn offers for the brand and its customers, as well as the similarity it has with supermarkets such as Walmart, Soriana or Bodega Aurrerá, where you can also pay for groceries with bank cards and loans granted by the same stores.
However, seeing beans, juices or soft drinks on the shelves where accessories, shoes and household items are mostly displayed, caused amusement among young people on social networks, who associate Coppel with its embargo policies.
Pantry with Coppel credit
The video, which accumulates 365 thousand reproductions and more than 9 thousand 600 “likes” was recorded in a Coppel store in Río Grande O Piedra Parada, in the state of Oaxaca.
However, although basic products can be seen on TikTok, the pantry that is sold for months without interest (MSI) is only made up of wholesale food, that is, if the user had wanted to buy beans, he would have had to carry six pieces.
And it is that this is a good option for those who are used to paying everything in “small installments” of between one and 24 fortnights.

And yes, although this sales strategy is not new, users have narrowed down the grocery sale on Coppel’s eCommerce page, where it is also available on credit. For example, the bag of Frijoles Bayos La Sierra, to which the tiktoker refers, can be bought in six pieces for 89 pesos and with store payments they would be paid at 6 pesos fortnightly.
You also have the option of lengthening the payments even further and being able to get the beans for just 121 installments in 24 fortnights… what an offer!
Coppel strategy and consumer suspicion
With the health crisis due to Covid-19 and the constant confinements, the Mexican Government announced in the Official Gazette of the Federation that all stores that sold basic necessities could open 24 hours a day, abiding by current restrictions, a fact that many brands took advantage to avoid closing their doors.
“Article 1: The purpose of this Agreement is Authorize a twenty-four-hour schedule, every day of the year, for commercial establishments that sell basic necessitiessuch as food and medicine”, says the Mexican Law.
Coppel would be one of the companies that would have used this resource so as not to have serious repercussions with the closure of commercial activities, according to the speculation of Internet users, who consider that the option to sell food for months without interest was born in order to help people find groceries immediately while keeping their branches open.
“It’s called survival, it was putting those products in or we would be out of work, and there are not a few employees,” Valeria Garcia
