The habit of some people to cross their legs naturally or automatically when sitting can bring damage to health, as this action affects blood circulation, warned the angiologist at the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (ISSSTE), Gabriel Hernández.
The specialist of the Angiology and Vascular and Endovascular Surgery of the National Medical Center on November 20 of the ISSSTE explained that arteries pass through the legs, which are responsible for supplying blood to the lower body.
“When a person crosses the legs, it tightens and obstructs the blood vessels, making circulation difficult. This causes problems such as varicose veins or venous insufficiency, “said the doctor in a statement from the company SIGVARIS, manufacturer of compression stockings.
Hernández explained that at the moment of crossing the legs, the entire weight of the body is loaded on one side and the spine is forced to adapt to a new distribution of weight, so it remains forced and compensates for a poorly distributed load.
“It is important to stop the bad habit of crossing the legs to promote circulation and even avoid possible thrombi in the legs that could compromise health,” said the doctor.
He added that to avoid complications from sitting for a long time, it is advisable to do physical activity, take a short walk or use the stairs.
To intensify the body’s natural circulation, it is recommended to raise the legs while sitting or lying down, as well as regular exercise helps keep the body healthy, Hernández said.
The specialist also mentioned that some sports are good for improving circulation such as: swimming, walking, cycling and yoga.
The ISSSTE doctor explained that it is essential to control weight with a healthy diet, which reduces the chances of feeling heavy or swollen legs .
He suggested that frequent use of graduated compression socks and stockings improve blood circulation and help prevent venous problems.
