Before the next premiere of Avatar: The Path of Water, James Cameron has given countless statements about the most important moments of his career. This couldn’t be complete without titanictape where Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio They starred in one of the most epic romances in movie history. But Jack, a character played by DiCaprio, was about to have the face of another actor. Which was the reason?
In interview for G.Q., Cameron looked back on those moments and films that made him a visionary. One of them is obviously titanic. When talking about her, the director mentioned a rather curious anecdote that made many think about the fate of Jack Dawson.
“There was a meeting with Leo and then a camera test. The meeting was fun because I was in the conference room waiting to meet an actor. I looked around, and all the women from the office were in the meeting. They wanted to meet Leo. He charmed everyone. He came back a few days later, and I had the camera ready to record the video. He didn’t know he was going to do a test. He thought it was another meeting to meet Kate (Winslet). I told them, ‘Ok, let’s go to the other room, we’ll say a few lines and I’ll record. He said, ‘You mean, read?’ I said yes, and he said, ‘Oh, I don’t read.’ I shook his hand and said, ‘Thank you for coming.’
Basically, DiCaprio’s refusal to read in the screen test could have thrown him out of the movie that catapulted his career to the top. Fortunately, the now Oscar winner instantly reconsidered and knew that it was an opportunity that he could not miss. At the time, Kate Winslet already had the role of Rose in her hands, so DiCaprio’s reading was no ordinary audition. It was the final step to becoming a star.
“He told me: ‘Wait, wait, wait. If I don’t read, I don’t have the paper? That is all? ´ I said: ´Oh, yes. Let’s go. This is a giant movie that’s going to take two years of my life, and you’re going to go do five other things while I’m in post production. So, I’m not going to screw it up by making the wrong casting decision. So, you’re going to read, or you don’t get the role. When I said “action”, he turned into Jack. Kate lit up and they replayed the scene. Dark clouds had parted and a shaft of sunlight came down to illuminate Jack. I was like: ‘Okay. He’s the guy,’” he concluded.
Fortunately for everyone, Leonardo DiCaprio’s negativity did not carry over to the filming of titanic, and the team produced one of the most spectacular and grossing films of all time. Thanks to the good reception of the audience, the tape collected more than $2.2 billion dollars, with rerun included. If it hadn’t starred DiCaprio, what actor could have played Jack to great success?
Juan Jose Cruz I am one of those who always defended Robert Pattinson as Batman and can see the same movie in the theater up to 7 times. My guilty pleasure? Low budget horror movie.
