For Alejandro Amenábar, success is not something strange. His first feature film, Thesis, it was a magnificent first film that won two Goya awards that placed him in the panorama of Spanish cinema. For years he has continued to add awards (a total of nine Goya awards and one Oscar) and now he has finally decided to try a new format.
As was the case with Riot gear and Rodrigo Sorogoyen, The Fortune it will be the first series of Amenábar, and arrives ready to sweep the season. Options to do are not lacking, starting because behind the project is one of our best directors.
An international cast and production
This international production that has stepped on the San Sebastián International Film Festival it is an original Movistar + production in association with AMC Studios and in collaboration with MOD Pictures, for which in the production it has had a great support.
This support is also noticeable in the cast led by Alvaro Mel (The other look) and Ana Polvorosa (Cable girls) next to Stanley tucci (The lovely bones), Clarke Peters (Da 5 Bloods: Brothers in Arms) and T’Nia Miller (The curse of Bly Manor). Karra Elejalde, Manolo Solo, Blanca Portillo and Pedro Casablanc are also part of this ambitious international project.
So much so that the series will arrive in the US next winter through AMC + and in Latin America and the Caribbean through AMC in early 2022. In Spain it will be available on Movistar + from September 30 with the first two episodes of the six that has the series.
The Fortune by Alejandro Amenábar and the comic on which it is based
As Movistar + explains in the synopsis of the series, it focuses on “Álex Ventura (Álvaro Mel), a young and inexperienced diplomat who finds himself unintentionally turned into the leader of a mission that will put all his convictions to the test: recovering the Underwater treasure stolen by Frank Wild (Stanley Tucci) ”. Along with him will be Lucía (Ana Polvorosa), a civil servant with a lot of character, and Jonas Pierce (Clarke Peters), an American lawyer who loves pirate stories.
The script (by Alejandro Amenábar and Alejandro Hernández) adapts The black swan treasure, the comic of Paco Roca that he himself has confessed to recognize in the series, So what part of a true story: the sinking of the ship Nuestra Señora de la Mercedes in 1804 whose treasure was found two centuries later, in 2007 by the American company Odyssey Marie Exploration. This fact began a fight between the company and the Spanish Government over the ownership of the contents of the sunken ship.
The treasure of the black swan (Orejero Armchair)
An adventure story based on true events
La Mercedes sailed from Montevideo in August 1804 and was attacked by the British HSM Amphion, which tried to take La Mercedes and three other frigates that accompanied it to port to confiscate their goods. They did it because I was charged with the payment of France for the support that Spain was giving him in the confrontation with Great Britain. The command of La Mercedes refused and began a battle with cannon shots that ended with the Spanish frigate sunk to the bottom of the sea with a treasure valued at about 385 million euros.
Two centuries later, the Odyssey Marine Exploration located the ship and began its extraction with the Black Swan Project. At that time it was the greatest treasure extracted from the depths of the sea, with some 600,000 gold coins and numerous objects such as shields. Upon discovering this, the Spanish Government got down to work because it continued to be the owner of its sunken ships and was obliged to protect them from looting, and ended up filing a lawsuit against Odyssey on May 30, 2007.
The State created a working group (which we will see in the series), which He would be in charge of investigating and proving that the ship from which the objects he had taken from the Odyssey sea came, was La Mercedes. The rest of the story, you will have to discover it in the series, which delves into all this in the best way.
It is certain that it will be a success for Amenábar and that will become one of the best series of the yearNot only because of him, because of the fascinating story he tells, because of the work team and because it is a unique real event told as an adventure. A safe bet if you want to see a good series this weekend.
