Currently Call of Duty: Warzone players can play on the Caldera map, but some miss playing on the original Verdansk map. Unfortunately, the map rotation will not reach free-to-play, as the vice president of design at Activision revealed that the large installation size prevents it.
During an interview with streamer TeeP, Activision VP of Design Josh Bridge was asked why there isn’t a map rotation in Call of Duty: Warzine, to which he replied that they don’t due to technical issues. “We want that. We all want that,” Bridge said before explaining that it’s not possible to have more than one map at a time without running into big problems.
There is a technical problem. The install and re-install size are fucking crazy,” said Bridge. “It would be like, essentially re-downloading the size of Warzone, and every time we do that we lose players.”

According to Josh Bridge, the reason Call of Duty: Warzone doesn’t offer a map rotation between Caldera and Verdansk is because of the large download size each map requires. “If we pull Caldera and say OK, we’re going to launch Verdansk, it would be…essentially re-downloading the size of Warzone.” Download size has always been a complaint for COD: Warzone.
Bridge also clarifies that currently a base PlayStation 4 can only store Call of Duty: Warzone and Modern Warfare, so if they added an extra map to the rotation, players would run out of space to play. According to Bridge, the team is putting a special focus on this section as they look to the future.
The new game and the new Warzone experience are designed together from the ground up”… Expect a massive evolution of Battle Royale with a new slice of gameplay and sandboxing.”
