Despite his great power, it seems that he was useless in most of the big fights.
When we first met the Genkidama, it was presented to us as Goku’s strongest attack in the Dragon Ball Z anime, but it only worked once… Leaving us with a big question in the air: ¿Why has it been so ineffective?? Why can’t an attack that gathers the energy of so many souls, planets or entire universes even present a risk to the main villains?
After all, the Genkidama is an incredibly powerful skill and possibly one of the strongest attacks in the Dragon Ball franchise as a whole, however in recent story arcs it has already been easily outmatched by other techniques. Perhaps one of the possible answers to its ineffectiveness is that the main problem you have is that making it work requires certain conditions to be met.
The first challenge is to fill the genkidama with ki, this takes a long time and requires our protagonist to not move, allowing Goku’s enemies the opportunity to interfere with the process, hence what happened with Vegeta. There’s also the question of what energy Goku has available to him, it’s not the same level of power that saiyans have to certain low level humans. That stopped him against Frieza and Jiren. To defeat villains as powerful as them, he would have needed a lot more energy than he was working with.
With Kid Buu, on the other hand, the circumstances were much more desirable to make the spawn work like before. With Majin Buu and Vegeta gaining some of the time they needed and the entire population of Earth lending their energy to Goku, thanks to the help of Mister Satan, the third Spirit Bomb was more than enough to finish off the villain. Whether the fight with Kid Buu will be the last time everything lines up so perfectly remains to be seen. for Goku and the Z fighters in the Dragon Ball Super anime. Longtime fans of the franchise would surely appreciate seeing this technique in action again.
The great and disappointing power that the Genkidama has shown in Dragon Ball
Despite his reputation, the Genkidama has only worked once in the Dragon Ball universe. Of all the times Goku has used it, the only time he achieved his purpose was at the end of Dragon Ball Z when he threw it at Kid Buu, the final villain of the saga. Kid Buu was the first, and thus far the last, Dragon Ball villain defeated by Goku’s strongest attack. Although, as we mentioned before, it was possible thanks to the joint support of Vegeta, Majin Buu, Mr. Satan and the rest of the earthlings.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that Goku haven’t had many opportunities to use the Genkidama against other villains. As we’ve seen, it’s one of the most powerful techniques in his arsenal, having been deployed a total of four times in the Dragon Ball canon, all situations where the Z Fighters had very few options left. Against Vegeta, the all-powerful Genkidama presented itself as Goku’s trump card, but failed to finish off the villain. It also didn’t work against Frieza or Jiren in the Tournament of Power.
This is in contrast to the original vision that gave us this technique, when he originally learned it from King Kai in Dragon Ball Z, he had a feeling that no opponent could withstand a direct blow from a genie charged with all its power. And while it’s true that the attack is superior to all of Goku’s other abilities, it just hasn’t served him as well as the Z Fighters would have hoped.
The repeated failures of Genkidama do not necessarily mean that the attack is overrated. Instead, their lack of success can be attributed to other factors at play. The technique didn’t work because Vegeta attacked him during the energy harvesting process at the time. As a result, Spirit Bomb lost a significant portion of its energy before it could hit Vegeta. On his second occasion, it went wrong due to the destruction Namek had already suffered. For this version of the attack, Goku had to channel energy from a planet that barely had any life left to draw from. As for the situation with Jiren, Goku could only rely on the energy of his Universe 7 teammates (excluding Vegeta). This simply wasn’t enough to defeat the strongest fighter in Universe 11, who was far more powerful than even Goku at the time. Hopefully in future story arcs the genkidama have a better future.
