The confrontations between University of Sports and Lima Alliance They are matches that always paralyze the entire country, and this is because they are the two most popular teams. The importance of these matches is multiplied when it comes to the definition of the national title. However, the 370th and 371st editions of this clash, the duels that will define the champion of the League 1 2023could be especially transcendental in the history of the merengue institution.
Through three reasons, Sport Data explains why the final between creams and blue and white, the best teams this season, would mark a milestone for the Ate club. Starting from the fact that next year the ‘U’ will celebrate its centenary, the negative streak without being able to be the monarch of Peruvian football and the setbacks in its last championship definitions.
It is important to point out that, throughout the history of the professional national championship, there have been four times that Universitario and Alianza Lima have faced each other to define the most important team of the season. They were in the editions of 1995, 1987, 1999 and 2009. In these four confrontations, Universitario has the superiority with three wins, with only one victory for the Victorians. Even the students have prevailed in the last three opportunities. Not a minor fact.
Finals between ‘U’ and Alianza Lima in the professional era

1955 | Lima Alliance 2-1 University |
1987 | University 1-0 Alianza Lima |
1999 | Universitario 3-1 Alianza Lima (Global score) |

Streak without titles
The 26 titles that Universitario records, both in the amateur and professional eras, have had very few lapses where the cream fans did not shout champion. There are three significant intervals. The one that spanned the longest is the one that occurred between 1949 and 1959. Secondly, they share two stretches of the 21st century: 2000-2009 and 2012-2022, both with nine years of waiting for a title. With one year less, between 1974 and 1982, this black list closes.
Between 2000 and 2022, Ate’s team has only managed to win the title in 2 of the last 20 seasons. It is in this context that this year’s final becomes relevant. If the ‘U’ cannot be crowned the monarch of Peruvian soccer, it would add a decade without being the best team of the year, equaling its worst streak, which occurred between 1949 and 1959. Something that would not be the best welcome for enter the celebrations for its 100 years of history.
Period | Lapse |
---|---|
1949-1959 | 10 |
2013-2022 | 9 |
2000-2009 | 9 |

A three-time championship to avoid
Alianza Lima has obtained the title of champion 26 times, including the much-discussed title in 1934. Throughout history, the blue and white, considering that championship, are the only team that has achieved the four-time championship in Peruvian soccer. On seven occasions, they have had the opportunity to become two-time champions.
If the team led by Mauricio Larriera becomes the Peruvian champion, it would achieve a three-time championship, being the second in its history, since it previously did so between 1931 and 1933. This new achievement would represent the worst situation for Universitario just before its centenary. Having their classic rival as a three-time national champion is something they will seek to avoid at all costs in the two games that will be played between November 4 and 8.
The third time’s the charm
Between 2002 and 2022, Universitario had two opportunities to be champion. On both occasions (2002 and 2020), Sporting Cristal became their bête noire, leaving the Trench North gasping in the stands. For this reason, the classics against Alianza Lima will represent the best opportunity for the team to seek revenge, and what better way to do it than against the compadre.
It should be noted that only 20% of the players who made up the runner-up squad in 2020 remain in the current team under the command of Jorge Fossati. Among the most outstanding footballers of that campaign, José Carvallo, Aldo Corzo and Luis Urruti, who are currently part of the starting eleven, are still in the cream ranks. Furthermore, it is relevant to mention that the current ‘U’ squad has a total of 23 titles, a figure considerably lower than the 59 held by Alianza Lima. Of course, there is a lot of hunger for glory in the merengue locker room,
