After experiencing one of the worst phases of the Mexican team In the CONCACAF tournaments, it took several months before the Aztec team recovered and won again in a matchup against the United States. Led by Raúl Chabrand, the youngsters managed to beat their opponent 3-1, thus obtaining their fifth consecutive trophy in the Sub-17 World Cupof the Confederacy.
In Guatemala City, the Doroteo Guaumuch Flores Stadium was the scene where the Tricolor was proclaimed champion of the Sub-17 World Cup in the region. Despite having secured their participation in the World Cup in Peru in 2023, the players triumphed over their most difficult opponent in the championship.
After the first ten minutes of the game, Stephano Carrillo, who also stood out as the competition’s top scorer, scored the first goal from the penalty spot. During the first half, the match was characterized by energetic competition in midfield.
It was in the 51st minute that Luis Gabriel Navarrete Torres managed to increase the advantage in favor of the Tri, however, 18 minutes later, the athletes of the American team managed to get closer by scoring their only goal in the match. Finally, at the close of the duel, Isaac Martínez, from a penalty, would finalize the third.
Although the result of the final did not question the presence of either of the two involved in the next World Cup, which will be held in Peru in November of this year, it did give Chabrand’s team the necessary security to seek the third world title in the category.
Why are Mexico’s under-17 categories successful?
In the last 38 years, the different Under-17 categories in Mexico have consecrated it as the most successful division, compared to others in the Tri, of national football, because this is the fifth consecutive title won in this hierarchy. They have two World Cups, two world runners-up and nine World Cup titles.
