Global smartphone sales in the second quarter of 2022 fell 9 percent compared to the same period in 2021.
The data belongs to Canalys preliminary reportwhich was published this Monday, July 18.
According to Canalys, the sale of smartphones decreased due to “the economic headwind and general uncertainty”.
In the detail by company, Samsung once again ranked first in market share, followed by Apple, which was second thanks to the excellent performance of the iPhone 13.
In third place were the Chinese brands Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo.
Samsung grew in market share compared to the second quarter of 2021: it went from 18% to 21%.
Apple, meanwhile, advanced from 14% to 17%; and Xiaomi, which had achieved a market share from 17% a year earlier, it fell to 14% between March and June 2022.
Oppo and Vivo scored in the second quarter of 2022 a market share of 10% and 9%, respectively.

How were phone sales in 2021: Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi
In all of 2021, phone manufacturers and suppliers sold 1.355 million units worldwide, a year-on-year increase of 7.1 percent. The value exceeded the 1,264 million smartphones that were sold in 2020.
The ranking of the top five smartphone manufacturers in 2021 was unchanged from 2020, as all were hit by severe supply shortages throughout the year.
Last year, Samsung remained in first place with just over 275 million smartphones sold in 2021, maintaining a 20% market share globally.
Apple, thanks to a very good fourth quarter (iPhone 13 had a lot to do with it), increased its shipments in 2021 to 230 million units (11% year-on-year increase).
The Chinese Xiaomi, for its part, consolidated itself in third place last year: it closed 2021 with more than 191 million smartphones sold.
Oppo and Vivo ranked fourth and fifth, with smartphone sales increasing 22 percent and 15 percent, respectively.
So far in 2022, the market share maintains order, but the difference between the two most important brands, Samsung and Apple, and Chinese companies, has widened.
