Right there, according to an autobiography of the actor (via), he improvised for the first time in front of the public in a staging of Alice in Wonderlandwhere he played the smiling Cheshire Cat.
His first professional job was on the culinary show farmhouse kitchen (2014). Then, at eleven years old, she landed her first recurring role on the series. The Centaur’s Mistress of Telemundo, impersonating “El Gato” throughout two seasons. At fourteen, Godoy joined the cast of the film Cheer up, youth!, by director Carlos Armella, which was Official Selection of Mexican Feature Film at the 18th edition of the Morelia International Film Festival. There he played Pedro, a teenager disappointed with the world of adults and who decides to create his own language.
Subsequently, the actor obtained his first two film stars through the comedy MexZombies and the horror tape Do not open the doorwhich were released only in 2022 through the service of video on demand ViX.
“Both were very difficult in their own way, and for the first time in my acting career, not every day was fun,” Godoy says in his biography. “There were very hard days, and the responsibility of being the protagonist began to hit me.”
Behind the scenes, the Mexican has also written and directed a handful of short films. Among them are blinded (2020) and almost art (2021), both available on YouTube, through the Algo Interesante channel.
Arrival on Netflix
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Iñaki Godoy was filming his first project for Netflix. It was about the successful Mexican series Who killed Sarah?, where he played Bruno, the stepson of Rodolfo Lazcano (Alejandro Nones). The following year, he joined the shooting of the imperfect, a show with the red “N” filmed in Canada and which turned out to be Godoy’s first project spoken entirely in English. There, his role was that of Juan Ruíz, a comic artist with the ability to become a chupacabra.
Finally, in November 2021, the big news came… Through a set of posters designed as “Wanted” posters, Netflix revealed that Godoy would give life to Monkey D Luffy at the show live action inspired by the manga and anime one piece. Filming took place in the first half of 2022 and a first look was revealed last month, as part of the TUDUM fan event.
About his character, it should be remembered that Luffy is the enthusiastic captain of the Straw Hat crew, whose adventures take him to dangerous oceans, with the goal of becoming the King of Pirates. And another peculiarity: his body is made of rubber, which is why he is able to stretch in a thousand different ways and use this to his advantage when fighting.
“I was very excited [cuando me dijeron que me quedé con el papel de Luffy]. And then he hit me: “This is going to change my life,” Godoy commented in an interview with teen vogue. “I didn’t get to meet [Eiichirō] Oda during the audition process, but I did meet him later. And I remember asking him that question. ‘Because I? Why did you like me?’ And he told me it was because I made him laugh with my audition.”
