Most people in the United States celebrate this holiday with family gatherings in their homes where they prepare a feast. In many homes it is common to offer a prayer of thanks to God for the blessings received during the year.
The main dish for Thanksgiving dinner is the traditional roast or baked turkey. This is filled with cornbread and sage. It is accompanied with a cranberry sauce, and vegetable dishes, mashed potatoes and sauce are usually served; as well as sweet potato. There is also a variety of desserts, with pumpkin pie being the most popular. Meals are served with spiced hot apple cider or sparkling apple cider. It is common to prepare pecan and apple pies.
