We recently told you that the Tlaxcala 2023 Beach Volleyball World Cup is the first to be held in Mexico. In fact, it is the first in 20 years to be held outside of Europe.
We want to tell you more details about the event and what you can see and do at the venues where the games will be played.
Since when has the Beach Volleyball World Cup been held?
The Beach Volleyball World Cup, also known as the Beach Volleyball World Championship, is the highest competition in this sport.
It has been celebrated every odd year since 1997, of which only the 1997 edition (in Los Angeles), the 2003 edition (in Rio de Janeiro) and the 2023 edition (in Tlaxcala) have been organized outside the European continent.
The tournament also functions as a qualification for the Olympic Games, as it grants a place to the winners of each category.
The winningest country in the history of the tournament is Brazil, with 13 titles. They are followed by the United States, with 5 titles, and Germany, with two championships. China, Russia, Canada, Netherlands, Norway and Argentina are the other countries that have won the World Cup once.
Who plays this world cup?
A total of 38 countries are represented in the 2023 edition of this competition. The tournament is divided into two stages: a first group stage and a second direct elimination stage. You can see how the teams were grouped and buy your tickets on the event’s official site.
Mexico is represented by two couples in the men’s category and two more couples in the women’s category. Some of the rivals that our compatriots will have to defeat in the group stage to advance are none other than the almighty Brazil, Germany and the United States.
Are there beaches in Tlaxcala?
As you surely know, Tlaxcala does not have beaches or coasts. However, three bullrings and an esplanade have been prepared in the cities of Tlaxcala, Huamantla and Apizaco to serve as the championship headquarters.

- “La Taurina” bullring in Huamantla.
- Rodolfo Rodríguez “El Pana” bullring in Apizaco.
- Esplanade of the Tlaxcala Art Museum (MAT) in Tlaxcala capital.
