The Minister of International Trade of Canada, mary ngexpressed this Monday to the secretary of Economy of Mexico, Raquel Buenrostrothe concern of the Canadian authorities for the reform of the Mexican energy market.
Ng and Buenrostro met Monday in Mexico City shortly before the start of the X Summit of North American Leaders in the Mexican capital.
The Canadian Ministry of International Trade said in a statement that Ng conveyed to Buenrostro Canada’s concern about the effect that the reform of the Mexican energy sector will have on investments in the North American country.
Ng told the Mexican secretary “the importance of finding a mutually acceptable solution.”
The Canadian minister also expressed Ottawa’s concern about the “treatment of Canadian mining companies in Mexico and the need for transparent processes for mining sector permits.”
During the meeting, Canada said Buenrostro offered “clarifications” on Mexico’s policy regarding the importation of genetically modified crops.
The Mexican government planned to ban imports of transgenic corn from the United States as of 2024.
But last week, the government of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador decided to postpone the measure for a year in the face of protests from Washington and Ottawa.
