Visiting a museum should be fun for your child, so you will help him to appreciate art throughout his life.
WHAT TO DO FOR YOUR CHILD TO ENJOY ART
1. Don’t see it as an obligation
If the mere idea of visiting a museum makes your child bother or throw a tantrum, do not force him, if you do so, you will only take away his taste for appreciating the value of paintings and works.
2. Create good expectations
Talk to your child and explain that they are going to visit a museum, if it is the first time they are going, explain what you will see there. This will encourage curiosity, create surprise and your child will want to discover this new place.
3. Go to an eye-catching exhibition for him
You must start from the age of your child and his interests. Perhaps a child under the age of five will find it difficult to appreciate pre-Hispanic art, but perhaps an exhibition full of colors or pictures of figures that he understands can amuse him.
4. Help him appreciate art
If you see that a painting attracts him more attention than others, ask him what he sees, ask him to describe the painting to you, to tell you the colors, what he likes best…
5. If you have questions, help him
You may not be an expert in art history, but you can help with references and museum exhibitions to explain your concerns to your child.
6. Find fun themes
The best thing for your child to enjoy the experience and want to continue visiting museums is to look for an exhibition that is special for children or that is on a topic of interest to your child, such as dinosaurs, animals, chocolate, objects, toys…
7. Time
Usually children under 10 years rapid despair, to themselves that want to be more than half a day appreciating the show, keep in mind that one hour is the ideal place for your child is happy time.
8. Enjoy art with your family
Perhaps after your visit to the museum and if your child was interested in a subject, a painter or work they can expand the information by going to a library or another museum that shares a particular subject.
9. Use simple words
If you go to talk to your son some current art, be sure to do it in simple words that your child can understand, but he will no longer get attention or be very confused.
10. Leave it for another time
There are times when, due to the importance of the exhibition, the museum can be very crowded, preventing your child from appreciating the works well. If so, go away, it will be another time that you can visit the exhibition, find a day and a time with less influx of people.
11. A good example
Perhaps some of the paintings you see in the exhibition are from a painter or artist who started making art as a child, and this story can inspire your child.
12. A great experience
When they return home, gather materials with which your child can make his own work of art, give him freedom to do whatever he wants, and then put his painting in a special place in the house.
Keep in mind that there are museums that are specially designed for children or that on certain days of the month offer children’s programs or activities.
