Surely you have already heard of this condition that happens to women, however, not many really know what it is and how they can identify it. On this occasion, in an exclusive interview with Dr. Érika Valencia Mejía, an expert in intimate health, who has her office at ABC in Santa Fé, she explains exactly all the characteristics of endometriosis.
What is endometriosis?
“Endometriosis is a fairly common disease in women. It occurs when tissue of endometrial origin (such as that which lines the uterus) is present in other parts of the body, such as the fallopian tubes, ovaries, intestine, bladder, etc. Therefore, every time the hormonal stimulus comes, these implants also menstruate and consequently cause a lot of pain, irritation, and even inflammation”, shared the doctor.
What causes it?
It occurs because there is retrograde menstruation, this means that just as menstruation is expelled through the vagina, there is also bleeding that returns through the fallopian tubes and falls into the abdominal cavity. On the other hand, there are other theories that say that there is an alteration in the immune system of the woman.
How to detect it?
Some of the symptoms are dysmenorrhea, infertility and a lot of pain during sexual intercourse, however it also presents in pain when going to the bathroom.
How can it be treated?
You should go to the gynecologist to perform blood or imaging studies to suspect the disease and be able to start the treatment indicated for each patient.

There are different treatments for each patient, it all depends on the degree of the disease and the doctor will have to assess to know which method should be used.
How to identify it?
Pain that prevents you from doing your daily activities. “The ideal is to go to the clinic once a year to give timely treatment,” concluded the doctor.
