We live in a reality in which it is difficult to conceive a franchised feature film with aspirations to become a block buster that does not contain a post credits scene closing your footage. Of course, the case of the funny ‘Sonic 2: The movie’ was not going to be an exception; And, in case you left the cinema at full speed or want to know how the bases for a potential third installment are planted, we will explain what happens in it.
eye, what’s up spoilers From this moment.
Here comes a new challenger!
Once the show’s heroes manage to defeat Dr. Robotnik—cool mecha included—and restore peace to Green Hills, and after a charming end credits sequence that uses pixel art to recreate the events seen in the film, ‘ Sonic 2: The Movie’ says goodbye with a post-credits scene that invite a new character from the Sega video game saga to the party.
As the GUN team analyzes the remains of the battle between Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Robotnik, we can see Stone in disguise looking for his mustachioed boss, but that’s not the point. Between rubble and twisted metal, an agent makes reference to a certain ‘Project Shadow’described as a top-secret experiment contained in a document dozens of years old.
Of course, hearing the name will have already lit up the lightbulb for fans of the adventures of the blue hedgehog, but then the camera begins to descend to a sort of underground laboratory where, obviously, we are allowed take a good look at Shadow the Hedgehog. After a detailed shot of his eyes, the image cuts to black, leaving us with a sea of nice cliffhanger that leaves the ground well paved for ‘Sonic 3: The movie’ -if it comes to exist-.
With all of you, the Supreme Hedgehog
At this point, you may be wondering who the heck is this kind of black-skinned version of good old Sonic. Well then Shadow was created by Takashi Iizukaand appeared for the first time in the recommendable ‘Sonic Adventure 2’ that debuted on Dreamcast -later it would appear on GameCube- in 2001, as a kind of dark reverse of the protagonist with antihero characteristics.
According to the game’s lore, Shadow was synthesized by Gerald Robotnick —the grandfather of the Doctor played by Jim Carrey in the feature films— with the intention of finding a cure for his granddaughter Maria’s illness. Of course, things did not go too well, and the army, considering the hedgehog a potential threat, decided to capture him and leave you in a lethargic state for decades.
Half a century later, the Dr. Robotnik we all know freed Shadow, with whom he teamed up. From this point, the experiment began a path of self-discovery alternating between alliances with the forces of good and eviland changing motivations between seeking revenge for Maria’s death at the hands of the army and protecting the Earth —like any self-respecting antihero, of course—.
Now it only remains to be seen if in the probable ‘Sonic 3’, the writing team will choose to embrace the existing dramatic arc or if they will invent new origins that can fit their narrative plans. Regardless, the cards are already on the table, and they still have a good handful of familiar faces to include like Amy or Rogue; material to work on, of course, is not lacking.
In case you want to dig deeper into the character’s history, after his appearance in ‘Sonic Adventure 2’, he has made an appearance in a good handful of video games such as ‘Sonic Heroes’, ‘Sonic Forces’, and in his own adventure ‘Shadow the Hedgehog’, which was released in 2005 on the GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox.
