Finally one of the most anticipated films of the summer was released. Barbie It features the leading roles of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and their interventions have been received by the public and critics. However, there is another member of the ensemble that is getting a lot of applause: America Ferrera.
In the film, the actress plays Gloria, a Mattel employee who, along with her daughter Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt), helps the protagonist find herself during a trip to the real world, an odyssey that turns existentialist and helps the title doll discover a society she had never faced before.
During his visit to Mexico CityFerrera spoke at a press conference about how he gave Gloria a voice:
“I love that Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have told this story about connecting to Barbie through the experience of a grown woman. Barbie does not exist without humans. We created her, we played with her, we projected all our thoughts and ideals onto her, and all the girls who played with Barbie grew up to be adult women.”
The actress also offered her opinion regarding what Barbie may come to mean to those who see the film. These were his words:
“To be able to explore that connection between a grown woman living in the real world and experiencing femininity in the real world, but holding on to a childlike aspirational feeling with whatever Barbie gave her, is extraordinary. It is our entry point [para descubrir] how this doll is relevant to us men and women in this world. And I think it’s been said many times, this is a movie about a doll, but it’s more about humanity than plastic.”
According to the actress, who has confessed to never having been a fan of the doll, making the connection to the film was possible thanks to the director’s work. Greta Gerwig, who outlined the story in such a way that the current audience could reflect on the role that the doll has played in people’s lives, its chiaroscuro and its. When working on BarbieAmerica Ferrera realized that the person in charge of Lady Bird (2017) was doing something very different:
“I think it’s the mix of humor and intelligence and kindness and love and humanity that she has, and the fact that she was able to wrap it all up in a beautiful, sparkling love bomb. I can’t think of another female director of our generation who could crack the world of Barbie to make it so relevant and fun at the same time.”
Barbie It is already showing in theaters.
Jose Roberto Landaverde I love writing, listening, reading and commenting on everything related to cinema. I love music and am a fan of The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Paramore. My favorite movies are Rocky and Back to the Future and obviously one day I’ll climb the “Philly Steps” and drive a DeLorean. Faithful believer that cinema is the best teleportation machine, and also that on the big screen we can all see ourselves represented.
