It had been a long time without any news about the status of exterminate 3. Now, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have spoken about their plans for the second sequel to their iconic zombie story, and they both have encouraging words for fans.
In a recent interview with reverse, the creatives agreed that they would like to return to find out what has happened in the two decades since the first film, which has become a classic of British horror cinema, was released. These were the words of Garland, who also suggested an interesting title that takes the passage of time into account:
“A few years ago, an idea materialized in my head for what would actually be 28 Years Later. Danny has always liked the idea.”
The suggestion for the name in English is fully justified, since the two previous installments were called 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Laterreferring to the time that has elapsed since the arrival of the virus that, in this film universe, turns people into the undead.
Neither Garland nor Boyle were involved in the production of 28 Weeks Later (extermination 2), so this would be a good opportunity for them to re-explore their creation. At least that’s what Boyle thinks, who also admits that he would be willing to get behind the camera again if Alex didn’t want to. After all, Garland already has a ton of directing experience:
“We’ve talked about it very seriously, very carefully,” says Boyle. “If he doesn’t want to direct it, I would be willing to if we can execute on an equally good idea.”
In short, both the scriptwriter and the director would be interested in returning for 28 Years Later. This with the condition of being able to correct everything that they did not like about the failed second part:
«I resisted [a hacer una secuela] for a long time because there were things of extermination 2 that bothered me,” Garland said. “I just thought, ‘To hell with that. I’d rather try to write a different story in a different world.
But… What does the protagonist of the first film think? Recently, during an interview with Colliderto promote his next film, oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy mentioned that he would love to return for a new installment. Interestingly, he also put a condition: that Garland and Boyle be on board. These were his words:
“I was recently talking to Danny Boyle and I said, ‘Danny, we shot the movie in late 2000.’ So I think we’re definitely getting closer to [hacerlo] 28 years later. But as I have always said, I am ready. I would love to do it. yes Alex [Garland] thinks there’s a script and Danny wants to do it, I’d love to do it.”
