Discover how newborns perceive the world visually.
It is impossible to remember how we perceived the world when we were babies, because our memory capacity develops until we are three years old. However, Japanese scientists have found that small 5-month-old infants capture certain images differently than older children and adults.
This quality is called perceptual constancy, and it deals with changes or differences in images that are imperceptible to adults. The brain capacity of babies can perceive that a given object changes its characteristics even when sensory information display that is equal.
This is because in the first months of life , babies tend to hold their gaze longer on images such as landscapes and objects, and notice changes as minuscule as movements , color and lighting. This deep attention span is lost when they reach the sixth or seventh month of age.
An example is when we move away from an object, which we know retains its physical characteristics, especially size. For a baby , perception is different: his brain , in a more sensitive way, will detect changes in size, position and lighting.
As you can see, babies are more sensitive to perceive their environment, making their world more than interesting.
