Globally, one in three people suffers from a sleep disorder. In Mexico, 75 percent of the population that goes to sleep clinics does so for snoring or sleep apnea, while 25 percent attends for insomnia, daytime sleepiness, and other disorders.
Reyes Haro Valencia, former director of the UNAM Sleep Disorders Clinic He has expressed that a person sleeps for about a third of his life, which demonstrates the importance of this rest. “Every night important functions are carried out, such as physical recovery, the physiological restoration of the organism; the production of hormones, neurotransmitters and new cells, as well as tissue regeneration that strengthens the immune system.
It is essential to have a healthy lifestyle
To avoid all these problems, it is essential to have a healthy lifestyle: we must exercise, eat and sleep well; if we sleep poorly, less time or have a disorder, the body does not recover, we will be tired, we will make mistakes and we will be more prone to diseases.
- Sleeping adequately reduces traffic accidents and many situations of violence that are observed in modern societies, as stated by the university expert.
- The best way to achieve this is with behavioral techniques, among which are:
- Locate the ideal posture and concentrate on breathing.
- Seek the conditions to rest: how to avoid excessive intake of liquids and irritating foods before bed.
- Keep electronic devices out of reach.
- Set the alarm clock for the time you should get up.
- Do not look at the clock at night.
Currently, there are four indicators of good sleep quality in adults, which are the following:
- Fall asleep in about 10 minutes.
- Have continuity of that rest during the night.
- Depth of sleep: corresponds to dreaming.
- Sleep duration: it should be between seven and eight hours.
