This emotional moment for Goku completely changes the view of Bardock.
Although Dragon Ball Super fans already know the story of Goku’s father, Bardock, Goku himself has not been lucky to have so many details about him; his youthful brain damage erased any memory he might have of his parents. Also, with the Saiyan species all but extinct, there aren’t really many people around to tell him stories about his family, though. it seems that finally Goku will be able to listen to his fathereven for a moment.
An approach to the image of Bardock that could change history
The Granola saga in Dragon Ball Super has revealed a lot of information about Bardock in its latest chapters, starting with the question that Bardock was present at the assault on the planet Cereal, home of Granola. But Bardock positioned himself against the Heeters, who organized the invasion, and in fact defended a young Granola and his Namekian caretaker, Monaito, who would later become the only survivors on the planet. He even faced Gas, the head of the Heeter who has proven surprisingly difficult for modern Saiyans. Truth be told, it’s a softer portrayal of Bardock than many fans expected, which is why this new backstory has been somewhat controversial, as implies that Goku’s kindness was an inheritance from his father rather than a result of that early brain damage that prevented him from conquering Earth.
In chapter 82, Monaito produces a broken Scouter that he has apparently kept for 40 years, thereby claiming that it is the one that Bardock had with him when he fought Gas. Vegeta gets the Scouter to power up, hoping that any recordings in the device’s memory might provide some interesting information about Gas’s weaknesses. Using Granolah’s eyepatch robot, Oatmeel, they manage to play an audio clip of Bardock’s voice. Even though the chapter ends before the fight between Bardock and Gas is resolved, offers Goku the chance to hear his father’s voice for the first timetriggering a brief memory of the moments before his launch to Earth.
While Goku has never worried enough about not knowing his parents, it seems that the sound of Bardock’s voice has managed to awaken something inside him. Even With only a few panels of the scene, it is clear to us that this moment has had great meaning for Goku.. At the end of the day, Goku has always been depicted in Dragon Ball as having a very different temperament than most Saiyans, including his own brother Raditz, who nearly killed him when they met. Many fans attribute it to Goku hitting his head on arrival on Earth, and it’s entirely possible that even Goku believes it in-universe. However, the consequence of that theory would then be that Earth’s greatest hero is simply the result of an accident, and everything that makes Goku “good” is actually a flaw by Saiyan standards. This radical change in the characterization of Bardock is significant for the plot, but the opportunity that Goku is given to learn about the exploits of his father is even more so; this could mean that Goku is no longer the only “good” Saiyan, and whether or not he has cared for this fact, he can know with some certainty that his father would be proud of the life he has led in history. Land.
In short, manga protagonists often have complicated relationships with their parents, in some cases they have been absent, neglectful, or downright evil. Goku has distinguished himself by not having problems with his father, but this moment does not spoil it at all. Hopefully in the future Goku and Dragon Ball Super will find a way to preserve this message from Bardock so that Gohan and Goten also have the opportunity to connect with their past and, who knows, give us another perspective that we would never have considered on the character of Bardock. Goku and other traits of his ancestry.
