Leaving something behind in the car is normal, but leaving a person locked up is serious. For the most clueless, Volvo Cars has developed a technology that will prevent pilots from forgetting the crew in the vehicle.
The Gothenburg, Sweden-based premium car manufacturer announced a radar system that will prevent both children and adults from forgetting in the vehicle.
As the report published on the website of Thirdthis new indoor radar it is programmed to be precise and sensitive enough to detect the smallest movements on the sub-millimeter scale, such as those of a sleeping toddler.
The system will be incorporated in the next electric SUV EX90, designed to avoid accidents or tragedies due to forgetting minors or other people in the rear seats. This model will be presented on November 9, but the function is expected to be included in other Volvos.
How do radars work?
With integrated sensors in the top of the console, roof and trunk reading lights, the new radar system will allow detecting sub-millimeter movements throughout the car.
Alarms will sound when detect that a family member, child or pet has been left in the passenger compartment when attempting to lock the vehicle. If it does detect, the car will remain unlocked and display a reminder in the center display for the driver to check for occupants.
With this technology, the air conditioning of the new EX90 can remain on, to improve comfort and help reduce the risk of hypothermia or heat stroke, as long as the high-voltage battery has a sufficient charge.
“No one chooses to be distracted or tired, but we know it can happen. We are all human and distraction is a fact of life. With the help of the most advanced technology, we will prevent people from accidentally leaving family members or pets behind.”, assured Lotta Jakobsson, technical specialist in injury prevention at Volvo Cars.
