The co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin asked for, and received in abundance, examples of “the craziest, most insane criticism” of him on Twitter and elsewhere..
Buterin’s light-hearted request came in a Tweet on January 14th sharing some of his favorite reviews and revealing the lighter side of the creator of Ethereum (ETH). More than 500 people responded in the first fifteen minutes, although the majority supported Buterin. At the time of this writing, his tweet had more than 1,200 comments..
Among the four criticisms that Buterin published there was one from a user who said “He looks like an alien addicted to crack”.

What are the craziest, most insane reviews you’ve seen of me on twitter or elsewhere? Here are a few good ones, I wonder what else people have seen that I haven’t!
Vitalik’s father, Dmitry, recalled a rather insane conspiracy theory that he was actually a russian secret agent and that Russian President Vladimir Putin was behind the creation of Ethereum.
Own Vitalik brought up how “two different Reddit trolls!” He had been compared to Hitler back in 2017 and shared a screenshot of the comparison on a Tweet.
Ethereum was one of the first examples of initial coin offerings (ICOs) in the cryptocurrency space and has been one of the most successful with over 778,000% gains since 2015. But today it is criticized for being a “centralized premine.” One user cited an unhinged take seen frequently during the ICO craze of 2017 shows the “Vitalik ponzi spider” and depicts Vitalik as the spider in charge of the Ethereum ponzi network.
Not everything was critical: some users took the opportunity to share their favorite memes, including this joke that relies heavily on a play on words.
Other users dusted off the classics, including this meme shared on a comment showing an aging Buterin with a hypothetical news headline that reads “Breaking News: Ethereum 2.0 Finally Released”. Considering how old the meme is, it’s hard to say there isn’t some truth to the criticism about how long Eth2 is taking to launch.
Although the Twitter thread was about all the crazy criticism Buterin has received over the years, most of the users who responded did so in jest. And ConsenSys alumnus, John Lilic noted that despite all the criticism of Buterin, both real and comic, he “has been working to improve the space since almost day zero.”.
