Lopez Holcan Matteroa young man who recognizes himself as indigenous, went viral by attending his graduation ceremony dressed in pre-Hispanic-inspired attire, similar to that of the concheros or Aztec dancers of the capital’s Zócalo.
The young graduate of the Biochemical Engineering career at the university National Technological of Mexico joins the series of young people who attend the graduation ceremony in native garb. However, López Holcan Mattero’s clothing differed because it did not correspond to that of a contemporary indigenous people, but rather to what dance groups claim to be pre-Hispanic.
Graduation ceremonies are considered special moments in which students come with gala clothes, generally Western. However, for some years the trend has changed and dozens of young people come with gala clothes from the regions where they originate, expressing pride in their roots and culture.
Holcan Mattero did not hesitate to attend his graduation, one of the most important days for any young person, with what he considers the clothing of his culture. He himself was in charge of uploading the video through his TikTok account. In the short the name of the student is heard, who between palms and a smile receives the diploma from the hands of a teacher. In the description of the TikTok, the young man in the pre-Hispanic-inspired outfit wrote:
“I graduated as a Biochemical Engineer. Resisting a social and cultural lag of 500 years”.
The video is enlivened with the song Raíz Viva by Los folklorists in which music of pre-Hispanic inspiration is heard with drums, shells and clay flutes.
The video, already viral on all social networks, is being received with great joy by users, who celebrate that the young man is proud of his roots and identity. Congratulations!
