  • In a survey carried out in 2021, it was revealed that 36% of men between the ages of 25 and 45 who had suffered from erectile dysfunction in the last year avoided sexual encounters for this reason.

One investigation found that men who took viagra for erectile dysfunction had a 13% lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events. Taking medications or erectile dysfunction also reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease-related deaths by 39% and the risk of dying from any cause by 25%.

The study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine examined data from about 70,000 men with erectile dysfunction (ED). The researchers compared the health outcomes of those taking inhibitors such as Viagra (sildenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil), with those not taking drugs to treat erectile dysfunction.

The investigation, however, could not prove cause and effect. Men with erectile dysfunction able to take these medications and engage in sexual activity “may be healthier to begin with”, and that can contribute to your health outcomes. Also, the study only looked at ED drugs obtained through insurance.

Viagra was originally tested to treat angina, chest pain associated with coronary heart disease. When the researchers noticed that the drug improved erections, they changed their focus to treating erectile dysfunction.

In a study carried out in 2013, Viagra’s active ingredient sildenafil was found to significantly relieve painful menstrual cramps in women aged 18 to 35 when taken vaginally. However, more research is needed.

The researchers previously looked at whether the type 5 inhibitors Viagra and Cialis could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and related dementias. The latest study from the National Institutes of Health found no evidence that those who take erectile dysfunction drugs are less likely to develop the condition.

Since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Viagra in 1998, hundreds of thousands of men have taken drugs to enhance their sexual performance. In 2020 alone, almost 3 million prescriptions were written.

Erectile dysfunction occurs when a man is unable to get or maintain an erection that is firm enough for sexual intercourse. Up to 30 million men in the US, mostly middle-aged and older, have the condition, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
