Little more than fifty years after the creation of Scooby Doo, Velma’s character will finally be confirmed as a lesbian. This will happen in the next Halloween special Scooby-Doo Trick or Treat. The information was revealed through a small clip from the film where our favorite character with the glasses and the orange sweater is left speechless for the first time, after meeting a fashion designer.
This is not the first time that several involved in the creation of said characters try to give the character such an orientation (via). Live action movies directed by James Gunn originally had such a feature in their original scripts. Also the animated series Mystery Incorporated has hinted at it on more than one occasion. However, this will be the first time that Velma will be openly lesbian on screen.
in the future Scooby-Doo Trick or Treat Velma will meet costume designer Coco Diablo. A character who usually sets up outfits for various of the villains and tricksters who take on Mystery’s team on command. The scene shows how the character is speechless after meeting the girl. Her calculating personality analysis immediately makes it obvious that she would be the perfect woman for her. Will something else happen? You can see the clip below:
Failed attempts
Director James Gunn, responsible for the tapes live action of Scooby Doo, already openly commented that his Velma was gay. However, the Warner studio repeatedly frustrated his plans and forced him to make up the scripts until the character’s sexual preference was buried and not at all evident.
“Back in 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” Gunn said via Twitter. “But the study kept watering it down and watering it down, getting ambiguous until then nothing [la versión final] and finally to have a boyfriend [en la secuela]».
Later the creator of Mystery Incorporated, Tony Cervone, confirmed in 2020 that the lesbian Velma was also not ambiguous in his series. He stated that they made it as clear as could be made ten years earlier, but the character design has always been the same.
“I’ve said this before, but Velma in Mystery Incorporated is not bi. She is gay. We always planned for Velma to act a little bit out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship just wasn’t right for her and she had an unspoken difficulty with reason. There are clues as to why, in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow through Marcie’s arc, it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago. I don’t think Marcie and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but after the reboot, they are a couple. You may or may not like it, but that was our intention.”
