If a series has caught the attention of social networks, that has been Velma. Unfortunately, the large number of comments around it are not for the best of reasons. Since its launch on HBO Max, Velma He faced a series of negative reviews rarely seen by fans of the character, however, now it is his creator who defends such a judged product.
In an interview for the magazine emmysCharlie Grandy, who developed the story of Velma next to mindy kaling, spoke about the overwhelming pushback the project faced. Although Warner Bros. and the production team had the best intentions, the public did not react in the same way. This was Grandy’s opinion on the harsh comments that were published for several weeks.
“The original Hanna-Barbera shows are still there for you to watch. We are not deleting the originals. We just want to be a little ice planet in the outer regions of the Scooby-verse! Mindy (Kaling) came up to me and said that she would love to work on a story with Vela…she loved her character and she thought it would be fun to have her at the center of a show.”
Last January, a single chapter was enough for thousands of viewers to rage against the creators and writers of Velma. Among the most criticized aspects of the project are the stereotypes of South Asian women, the unwise humor, the changes in the attitude of certain characters, and the subversive tone with which certain problems were addressed.
“We are wondering: ‘Why stop at only Velma being South Asian?’ None of these characters have their origins in being white. We were worried about going to Warner Bros. and asking them to do it, but they said, ‘Do it. It’s the moment! Just make sure it’s fun and good!’” Grandy added.
Against any forecast, Velma it had a relatively high audience. A few months ago it was reported that the series would have a second season and that the new episodes would already be in development. For better or for worse, the behind-the-scenes team has a lot to work on, as no one ensures that the same audience will take a look at the second season after that bad taste in their mouths. In addition, they have to deliver a quality product if they intend to expand the project for several more years.
did you enjoy Velma? If you haven’t seen it and want to give the controversial series a try, you can find it on HBO Max.
Juan Jose Cruz I am one of those who always defended Robert Pattinson as Batman and can see the same movie in the theater up to 7 times. My guilty pleasure? Low budget horror movie.
