In the month of February 2022, vehicle production in Spain reached 189,145 units. This volume of vehicles manufactured in Spanish territory, if compared to that obtained in the same period of time last year, translates into a drop of 12.9%.

This number of vehicles manufactured in production centers located in Spanish territory, if compared to that registered in the same period of time the previous year, represents a significant 12.9% drop. Industrial activity in the automobile sector continues to decline.
Regarding the accumulated period, the data is also negative since there are two consecutive months of decreases. Between the months of January and February the production of vehicles in Spanish factories accumulated 369,053 units, 15.2% less than in 2021. The global shortage of microchips is now added to the shortage of certain components and/or raw materials from Ukraine and Russia.
The fall of the European market weighs down Spanish production
On the other hand, and no less important, is the fact that the main European automobile markets continue to register falls in the number of new car registrations. Most of the vehicles manufactured in Spain are destined for export to supply markets such as Germany, France or the United Kingdom.
In regards to the production by type of vehicles, during February, passenger cars have registered a lower fall compared to commercial and industrial vehicles. The production of passenger cars reached 152,080 units, 9.8% less than in the previous year. The manufacture of commercial and industrial vehicles decreased by 23.4% to 37,065 units.
The production of alternative vehicles also falls in February
The alternative vehicle production (electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and bifuel) during February 2022 reached 22,100 units, which represents a decrease of 4.5% compared to the previous year. The drop in the production of bifuel vehicles (LPG and CNG) was a real drag. Despite this, the production share of alternative vehicles stood at 11.7% respectively.

In the specific case of the electrified vehicles, continue to grow in total production, accumulating 9.8% of the manufacturing quota in February and 10.4% so far this year. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) represent the largest production volume with up to 11,991 units. However, this volume represents a drop of 1.7%. For its part, the production of battery electric vehicles (BEV) grew more strongly, by 15.4% with 6,560 units in February.
On the other hand, bifuel vehicles suffer strong setbacks 64.9% and -31% for Natural Gas Vehicles (VNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) respectively. In February, 696 units of natural gas vehicles and 2,052 LPG units were manufactured. Last but not least, we have the non-plug-in hybrid vehicles that saw their production increase by 180% with 801 units.
