An unvaccinated teacher at a California elementary school. It infected half of its students and 26 people in total when they contracted the Covid-19 Delta variant, researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found.
There were no preventive measures against COVID-19
Investigators said the teacher attended school for two days despite showing symptoms of Covid-19. And furthermore, he read aloud to the class without a mask during that time. The infections matched the classroom seating chart, and the students who sat closest to the teacher were the most likely to become infected.
Authorities said the report showed why the vaccines, the masks. As well as other prevention measures, they remain critical to preventing Covid-19 infections as American schools reopen.
They also warned that anyone with Covid-19 symptoms should stay home to avoid infecting others.
The importance of prevention
“Evidence has repeatedly shown that multi-level prevention strategies. Like vaccination for all children and adults who are eligible. Masks for all students, teachers, staff, and visitors; ventilation. As well as physical distancing cohort; and screening tests: work to prevent the spread of Covid in schools ”. This was stated by Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, at a news conference on Friday.
The report is likely to increase requests for vaccine mandates in schools. Same that some districts like New York City have already implemented. The children in the California research in Marin County were too young to be vaccinated.
How much danger are children in?
Tom Frieden, former CDC director, said: “Delta is doubly contagious and we must improve our game to keep children in school safely. That means teachers, staff, and eligible students must be vaccinated, and EVERYONE must be covered. Multiple layers of protection are essential ”.
But Walensky said: “Unfortunately, many schools have chosen not to implement these recommended tools. We recognize and follow closely the cases and hospitalizations of children at the same time that the school reopens ”.
There have been roughly 2 million Covid-19 infections in the five to 17 age group and 300 associated deaths, according to another CDC report released Friday.
The teacher continued working despite presenting symptoms
In the outbreak in Marin County, investigators investigated an unnamed elementary school. It is customary for CDC retain identifying information in disease investigations.
The outbreak took place between mid-May and June and started with the infected master. Who was one of only two members of the school staff who were not vaccinated. The teacher had symptoms of Covid-19 in mid-May, but continued working until she received a positive coronavirus test.
