The epic story of the war between vampires and werewolves will soon hit the small screen. Or at least, that’s been the plan for almost a decade. In 2014, Len Wiseman, co-creator and director of the first two films of Underworld, revealed during the New York Comic-Con that year that among the proposals to expand the franchise, there was a television series. And while the wait has been long, fans will be happy to know that Wiseman hasn’t taken his finger off the line.
In a recent interview with E.W.on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the premiere of the very first film Underworldthe Californian filmmaker assured that although the vampire franchise has been on indefinite hiatus for more than five years, its future is guaranteed.
“There is a project that is being worked on,” he commented briefly. «I can’t talk about it, but I assure you that there is a future for Underworld«.
When asked if the project in question consisted of the television series announced years ago, Wiseman had no choice but to confirm it. “That’s what I mean,” he pointed out.
In 2016, the same director commented to Collider that he preferred not to announce a tentative date for the launch of his show, due to fear of not being able to meet the deadline. But he also reiterated that he had all his hopes pinned on the project.
“There has been a lot of conversation and even development around what this series could be,” he said at the time. “It’s really something appropriate for television, in terms of how the characters can really bond, but also become something new. “It’s a really attractive space.”
One year later, deadline reported that the development of the television series Underworld was officially underway, with Wiseman serving as executive producer, through his Sketch Films banner, in cahoots with Lakeshore Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television. “The series will be quite far from the movies,” said the co-creator of this intellectual property. “I don’t want to say that it is more adult, but it is less comical in its tone and character.”
