Although regardless of the fact that attention is always paid, when caring for patients there are different unconscious mistakes that can be made.
In this case, something a doctor never wants is to offend or cause a bad impression on his patients. That’s why you study so much and, in fact, you never finish learning. Within the field of Medicine, it is essential that there is continuous education to learn about the most recent advances.
The legal risk doctors face
In fact, one of the risks that all health professionals face is facing a medical malpractice claim. In its most concise definition, it is a neglect of precautions and care qualified as necessary. It occurs when despite having the knowledge it is not applied and harm is caused to the patient.
The highest authority on this subject is the National Commission of Medical Arbitration (Conamed). It is the instance that is in charge of managing the entire legal process. Their role is to function as a mediator between patients and health professionals to resolve any conflict that is reported.
However, there are also unconscious errors and although many times they do not have legal consequences, they do give those who commit them a hard time. With this in mind, the Dr. Octavio Arroyoalso known on social media as Mr. Doctor, made a video to share his experiences.
Failures committed during a medical consultation
With humor he explains some mistakes he has made in the hospital. None was serious or endangered the integrity of their patients, but they did cause embarrassment and ridicule.
One of the situations he mentions occurred during a visit to a hospital where he worked. Out of courtesy, she told one of the patients that she was very pleased that they could see each other. The problem was that the hospitalized person had visual impairment.
On another occasion, a patient who was recovering from surgery was asked why he didn’t get up to walk. The problem was that both legs had just been amputated because she had diabetes. As justification, Dr. Arroyo mentions that it happened in his first days of medical internship and he was still inexperienced.
Instead, once again he greeted a patient who had come for a consultation with the gynecologist. Seeing that she had a growth in her abdomen, she asked her about how many months she was pregnant. In response, she told him that it was not a pregnancy but that it was a “natural belly”. In addition to the fact that she had gone to the hospital for a hysterectomy.
All the mentioned are Examples of unconscious errors that can be made during patient care. Fortunately, none of the cases became major and now they are only remembered as amusing anecdotes that must work so that other doctors avoid making the same mistakes.
