The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) rejected this Thursday the resolution of a Mexican judge on Yasmín Esquivelminister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) accused of plagiarism, which determined that she is the only author of her degree thesis.
UNAM rejects ruling in favor of the Mexican Supreme Court minister accused of plagiarizing her thesis
In addition, He asked that Esquivel desist from other trials and allow the Ethics Committee to conclude its work on the thesis and title of the minister.
The institution argued in a statement that it learned this Thursday of what was said by the minister’s lawyers to the media.
He indicated that, in addition to “its questionable provenance”, the university was not included as an interested party in the trial, “nor was it notified at any time. Even in the judicial bulletin published this day, the file is classified as secret.
He affirmed that the scope of this judgment does not bind or commit UNAM. “This must be made clear to avoid confusion in public opinion,” he said.
In addition, he indicated that he will continue his defense against the civil trial notified on April 27, when there were measures that prevent him from developing his work on Esquivel’s professional thesis.
Meanwhile, the minister declared on her social networks that with the determination she “concludes the issue”.
I continue, without distractions, with my commitment -of more than 38 years in public service- and the legal and moral obligation that I have with the administration of justice in Mexico, as minister of the SCJN, ”he settled.
“I am the only author of the thesis that allowed me to obtain a law degree from UNAM 36 years ago,” she asserted.
Finally, the UNAM asked Esquivel to withdraw from the other existing lawsuits and allow its Ethics Committee to conclude its work.
The controversy surrounding Esquivel’s 1987 thesis, accused of being close to the Government, broke out last December during her candidacy to be the new president of the Supreme Court, which was won by Minister Norma Piña in January.
Esquivel, proposed in 2019 by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has been controversial for being the wife of one of the government’s favorite contractors and for voting in favor of the current president’s issues, such as the consultation to prosecute former presidents and the reform of the Electricity Industry Law.
Previously, A UNAM ethics committee pointed out that the minister had copied a substantial part of the degree work presented a year earlier by the student Edgar Ulises Báez.
Since then, Esquivel’s defense has opened several judicial processes to interrupt any UNAM resolution of plagiarism and even to express any issue related to the case.
