In a recent development affecting rideshare drivers in Mexico City, the Government has implemented significant reforms to the Mobility Law Regulations. These reforms, published in the Official Gazette on September 8, have as their main objective ensure passenger safety and simplify requirements for drivers of transport applications such as Uber and DiDi.
One of the most notable changes is the introduction of annual certificates issued by the Mobility Secretariat (Semovi) that both drivers and their vehicles must obtain before being able to continue operating in Mexico City.
These certificates have a specific purpose and are designed to improve supervision and safety in passenger transportation, according to the report. Xataka.
The first certificate is issued to the driver and seeks to establish an accurate record of all taxi drivers who provide services in Mexico City., regardless of whether they work independently or through digital applications such as Uber and DiDi. This will allow better monitoring of those operating in the sector and will guarantee greater transparency.
The second certificate is directed to the vehicle that will be used to provide transportation services.. Its objective is to verify that the units comply with the safety requirements established by Semovi to circulate in the city. This includes aspects such as the mechanical condition of the vehicle and its compliance with safety regulations.
How to obtain the certificates?
To obtain these certificates, Drivers must pay the corresponding fees as established by the authorities. However, once these requirements are met, registered cars will be able to be used in more than one transportation application simultaneously, potentially increasing drivers’ flexibility.
These new requirements came into effect on the same day that the decree was published in the Official Gazette. To be eligible to receive these certificates, drivers must meet certain criteria, including possession of a valid driver’s license and ensuring that the vehicle is in good operating condition.
Additionally, drivers are expected to complete a training course to familiarize themselves with the new guidelines and agree to comply with them at all times.
