In the last week we have witnessed an incomprehensible number of decisions made by Elon Musk around the social network that he now owns: Twitter.
The platform has been losing its original purchase value in a tailspin, while each new change implemented, by who was the richest man in the world, has sparked general discontent in the community.
There is a perception that Elon seeks to maximize the profits generated by the site in the shortest possible time, which has blown everything up. At the same time, tremendously attractive new competitors have arrived.
He coup de grace Definitive came when Musk decided, out of apparent nothing, to change the name of Twitter and put the name of X, thereby killing the legacy of one of the best social networks in history.
In this context, there is an understandable impulse and urgency to abandon that platform. So now we present alternatives that are worth evaluating as a future new home.
Threads
The most obvious and frankly attractive option. Technically, Threads is a derivative of Instagram, since it logs in with the account of that social network and feeds on said algorithm to show suggested content.
Today it looks quite similar to Twitter in its initial stage. Although many functions are missing. Still, it’s a more sensible alternative. you can download it for Android here.
Mastodon
For many it is something like an alternative decentralized version of Twitter. Created in 2016, it is technically a microblogging social network, but it is based on users being able to create their own private networks.
Mastodon allows users to host smaller platforms called Instances, where who can view content is more carefully moderated. Its configuration is a headache, but it is an alternative in the end.
Visit their official website to evaluate the move.
Bluesky
The new social network from Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey, who sits on Bluesky’s board of directors and seems determined not to repeat the mistakes he made with Twitter.
The Bluesky app was launched on the Apple App Store in February 2023 as an invite-only beta version and has remained that way until now.
The truth is that it has generated great expectations and those who have tried it have had very positive reactions. So we could think of this network as the biggest threat to Threads and X.
You can enter the official website of the project and sign up for the increasingly long waiting list.
It’s more like a forum, but it is attractive for concentrating communities of users interested in common topics where the dynamics of interaction is much more cordial than on Twitter today.
It is not a perfect substitute but it is attractive for the current context and the situation in which everything is.
spill
Created by former Twitter employees Alphonzo “Phonz” Terrell and DeVaris Brown. It is a more visual alternative, where the text is complementary to the use of image, video or GIF animations.
It is positioned as the funniest and most striking so far. But we don’t know what future it will have. Just like Bluesky is necessary join a waiting list.
