On Wednesday afternoon, a memorandum of Elon Musk where he gave an ultimatum to the Twitter employees: agree to work under extreme pressure or resign on Thursday. The move was possibly intended to energize what was left of the social network’s workforce, yet hundreds of employees chose to resign en masse.
Many of these workers said goodbye to their work at the edge of 5 in the afternoon on Thursday with two messages on the network causing the TT #RipTwitter to become and remain a global trend. Many even logged out in the middle of meetings with Musk himself.
Hundreds refuse to bow to pressure from Musk
The richest man in the world had sent the ultimatum that detailed the new corporate culture of what he called “Twitter 2.0” as well as a form where each employee promised to follow it to stay in the company.
“In the future, to build a groundbreaking Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will have to be extremely tough. This will mean working many hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will constitute a pass,” read the ultimatum, which was leaked by The Washington Post.
“If you are sure you want to be part of the new Twitter, please click on the link below”, where they had to press a yes on a form. If they fail to do so by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, they would be out of a job and receive three months’ severance pay.
In a move that many analysts describe as obvious given the uncertainty that prevails in the company, hundreds of employees rejected the ultimatum and preferred dismissal. The South African businessman had already fired half of the staff of approximately 7,500 Twitter workers, then the resignations of top executives began, but the departure this Thursday was massive.
Twitter employees say goodbye with #LoveWhereYouWorked
under the hashtag #LoveWhereYouWorked, the employees said goodbye to Twitter remarking that the time that their career in the social network lasted had been good. There are entire threads where they explain that the culture that Twitter used to have was magnificent and that they were not going to accept abuse.
Other employees were more blunt, projecting insults onto the company’s San Francisco facade with epithets directed at Musk such as “Mediocre child, petty racist, parasite supreme, apartheid profiteer, cowardly billionaire.”
In accordance with The Vergesome critical company departments for its operation have been left completely empty, such as the one that moderated the contents.
Musk had withdrawn meal privileges and completely removed the home office, but according to leaks he has decided to allow some “exceptional workers” to continue working remotely. It is even said that last night he was in personal meetings with key employees to ask them not to leave the company.
“The best stay, so I’m not super worried”: Elon Musk
Musk, as always sarcastic, has mocked the supposed death on Twitter by posting memes and saying that “the best stay, so I’m not super worried.” However, he shut down Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters and blocked entry cards until Monday for fear of an attack on the company.
Thursday sent a message to remaining employees (estimated just under a thousand):
“Hello. Effective immediately, we are temporarily closing our office buildings and suspending access to ID cards. The offices will reopen on Monday, November 21. Thanks for your flexibility. Please continue to comply with company policy by refraining from discussing confidential information on social media, with the press or anywhere else. We look forward to working with you on the exciting future of Twitter.”
